Get the Lead Out-Focus
On Grant Initiative
The U.S. Health Service has stated that lead poisoning is
"the most devastating environmental disease of young children." The
American Academy of Pediatrics has noted that lead poisoning is "the most
preventable disease affecting children in the U.S." It is estimated that
there is lead paint in over 5.7 million homes in the U.S. Each year there
are over 200 deaths from lead encephalopathy , over 800 children have
permanent brain damage. One to two million children in the U.S. have lead
poisoning.
Objectives for the
Initiative
Our objectives are to coordinate
and execute a successful campaign to: 1) identify homes that have lead
poisoning and catalog information regarding children that dwell in those
homes; 2) use our Youth Corp ,(along with adult volunteers), to help conduct the survey and catalog
information; 3) conduct lead test in the homes surveyed; 4) use (church
owned Gospel radio station) radio to inundate the air ways with information
about lead poisoning and the survey being conducted; 5) compile test results
and send to lab for analysis; 6) second-year goal is to go back to each home
and inform occupants of results and get every child under six years of age
tested that live in homes found to be lead poisoned.
